Vikings is inspired by historical events. In The Last Kingdom we follow Uhtred, son of Uhtred. A Saxon born, Danish adopted warrior who takes on the name Uhtred Ragnarson, referring to his Danish step-dad. The Last Kingdom is based on the novels by Bernard Cornwell (The Saxon Stories -- definitely worth a read!).

Vikings though has branched it's story out massively. It has the advantage over Last Kingdom as the show ran for 93 episodes in comparison to Last Kingdom's 36. That show is still going on while Vikings has completed it's story. Both shows actually start off a bit slow for me.
