Neil Gaiman's work on the series is considered legendary for a reason. This story, in its entirety, is every bit as good as Watchmen and of equal (if not greater) literary merit. Were I to list the 100 best single comic-book issues I have ever read, three would come from this collection.
Is the Sandman a good guy or a bad guy?
- The Sandman tells him his origin, some parts of which resonate with Ben Grimm... And in the end... Ten issues later, Ben is near death in the hospital after his battle with the Champion in the classic Marvel Two-in-One Annual #2. The Mad Thinker plans it so that some villain is able to get to Ben while he is still defenseless.

Because Sandman's mind can only handle his separated personalities for a limited time, he lost his ability to retain himself, crumbling and blowing away, leaving Spider-Man to ponder the nature of his scuddled foe.
Why does The Sandman put sand in Your Eyes?
- The Sandman is a traditional character in many children's stories and books. In Scandinavian folklore, he is said to sprinkle sand or dust on or into the eyes of children at night to bring on sleep and dreams. The grit or "sleep" (rheum) in one's eyes upon waking is the supposed result of the Sandman's work the previous night.
Where did The Sandman get his powers from?
- His body and the radioactive sand bonded and changed Marko's molecular structure into sand. Impressed, he named himself the Sandman after his new powers. Marko clashed with Peter Parker/ Spider-Man for the first time at Midtown High School. He escaped Spider-Man in his first battle, but later Spider-Man found the Sandman hiding in his school.
