It's very clear that Quill has lost all his celestial powers by killing his father, so he likely wouldn't be able to handle an Infinity Stone as he did in the original movie.
Why does Peter Quill have his celestial powers?
- This tells us that Ego alone lacks the power necessary to expand his body across the galaxy. However, two celestials could do it. Peter being a celestial likely means he has his own power source. If Peter were simply drawing power from Ego then why would Ego even have to bother doing his whole quest to have a child in the first place?
Is it possible that Peter Quill is still alive?
- He still has the capability, and we have only Ego's word that there are no other compatible power sources. Ego has every reason to lie in this case, as it is his last bid to save his own life and advance (or at least salvage) his plan. We have no evidence that his words were a lie, but it is not impossible that he was lying or mistaken.

- Peter Quill was born in Late 1980 to Meredith Quill and Ego, making him a hybrid of human and Celestial. His conception was all part of a plot set up by his father to produce a second Celestial, whose power he could use to complete the Expansion, which involved assimilating millions of worlds into Ego's very being.
