You will encounter plenty of Weedle, Kakuna, and Caterpie. Snag a Caterpie while you're here; it will evolve into a Metapod at level 7. It's better to catch a young Caterpie instead of its evolved form, Metapod....Viridian Forest.

Is jolteon better than Pikachu fire red?
Not only does Jolteon have better Special Attack, it also has better Special Defense and Speed by quite a large margin. However, Raichu is able to use a relatively larger movepool and its stats aren't too shabby either. Assuming we aren't using TMs, Pikachu can learn Thunderbolt (!!)
