You can help Cerys with her Possession quest with the hym and you can help Hjalmar kill the ice giant. Later on you have to choose who to side with when investigating an attack. That determines who becomes ruler.

- Siding with Hjalmar you will have to fight more berserkers and you will never find out who was the mastermind behind the plot. He will also be chosen to be King of Skellige. If you side with Cerys you will investigate and discover who was behind the massacre. You will also gain access to a Place of Power not accessible any other way.

- Hjalmar is just reckless and doesn’t seem to care much for Skellige other than raiding Nilfgaard. Your opinions ?
What happens if you choose Hjalmar in the Witcher 3?
- Skellige becomes strong, united, and prosperous, and the people benefit from her rule as the first queen of Skellige. Should you choose Hjalmar, he'll attack Nilfgaard right away before his people can be united. Many lives will be lost, and the clans will remain scattered.
