Does VRAY use RAM?
Host Applications just like V-Ray need some RAM to keep the scene open and to operate with it. Depending on scene complexity Host Application may occupy a few gigabytes of RAM which could be very valuable for V-Ray in case there isn't enough Memory for the Rendering.

16 GB of RAM can be enough for many starting out with 3D, but usually, you outgrow this quite quickly. RAM speeds & timing can normally be ignored, as these don't make much of a difference performance-wise. Getting DDR4-4166 RAM won't be noticeably faster than DDR4-2666 RAM.

- Cannot advise on any particular brands, although, there should not be a noticeable distinction in V-Ray between top of the line and mid-class memory. As for the amount - my recommendation is to observe memory usage while working on projects which are standard for your practice and base your decision on the average amount utilized.
