For the shows that Crunchyroll does the subbing on, they contract out to various people. Crunchyroll is given the script from the anime studios before the show airs, which allows time for the contracted translators/editors/timers/ect... to finish the subtitles and have them ready in time for the show to be simulcasted.

Are Crunchyroll Subs accurate?

No translation is ever 100% accurate, and some are better than others. I prefer licensed subs over fansubs, and try to listen to the Japanese dialog while using the subtitles as sort of a guide.

Who does the subs for anime?

Well, the official English subbing is usually done by professionals at Funamation, but there are a of of fannsubs. There are people whose jobs are to translate anime. If you want a sub that will be accurate then definitely watch those translated by Funamation.

Subbed anime has it's own problems, and some translations are more accurate than others, but overall subbed anime will always be more accurate than dubbed anime. At the very least, when it comes to puns and wordplay, they can leave translator notes explaining the jokes!

With fansubs, they're almost accurate but sometimes the video quality is CRAP. With official subs, they're on time and the video quality is excellent but sometimes they don't accurately translate what the characters are saying. It goes both ways really. There's ALMOST none in between.

Good fansubs here usually do their best to explain the parodies or some difficult terms in anime. Translating from Japanese to Chinese I've heard is analogous from translating French to English. Considering the cultural and certain language similarities it makes it easier to translate between the two.

Are subs better than Dubs?

Both have their strong points. On of the main strong points of dubs is that you don't have to be carefully watching the screen, sometimes even pausing, in order to catch everything that's being said. On the other hand, people tend to prefer the way the sub sounds. Not always, but that's the trend.

Fansubs are just better. From 15 years of experience, official subs are better 90% of the time.

Do you support fansubs or official subs in Crunchyroll?

  • I support fansubs. Simply because they can come up with the best equivalents to informal Japanese terms and for anime like Gintama, they give support references, which we clearly do not see in official subs. Furthermore, official subs don't translate songs or have karaoke text [yes, for the obvious reasons].

  • Fansubs all the way because they get a good equivalent, as you said, and they are rarely wrong. Also, the format, placing, timing, font, and border of them makes them easier and more relaxing than reading those big, yellow, arial font subtitles.
