How was Herbie driven?
In the self-driving sequences in Herbie Rides Again and Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, a camera disguised as a light was mounted onto Herbie's front hood. This was connected to a TV monitor inside the car, which was used by the stunt driver in the back seat to see where he was driving.
How did they make Herbie drive?
In order to create the effect of Herbie driving himself, Disney concocted a detailed system of sprockets and pulleys connected to a second steering column under the front seat for a rear seat driver. There was also a second set of pedal assemblies, clutch cables and a shifter extension.
